God designed men to live with risk, adventure, and danger.

But today’s man has no rites of passage, no elders, no map to manhood. He may physically be an adult, but still wonders, “Am I a man?”

When John Sowers twin daughters were born, he felt exposed, thinking manhood was out of reach. He needed direction. Following in the steps of ordinary men and the heroes of history, legend and myth, he uncovered a new and ancient road.

Walk with John on his personal quest to discover the “wild masculine” and to become all that God intended men to be. From a thrilling brush with Kodiak bears in Alaska, to a war hero who rescued his comrades in the Valley of Death, from mythic heroes of Tolkien, to the footsteps of the One, True Myth – as Jesus walked from village into the wilderness, and back again.

Stunningly written, this revolutionary book calls older men out of complacency and younger men out of confusion. It calls all men into the greater Story – into a life of sacrificial love, holy defiance, and clear purpose.

  • This book is an encouraging and strengthening read for the man in your life, or for men and sons seeking The Heroic Path.
Ann Voskamp, New York Times bestselling author of One Thousand Gifts
  • The Heroic Path makes me want to ride a bald eagle to Alaska to hunt bear with my bare hands. Muscles, pride, anger don't make a man. Strength, love, passion and God make a man.
    John Luke Robertson, Duck Dynasty
  • "John is a loyal friend, husband and dad, and his book is witty, honest, and full of heart. I'm excited for you to get to know him."
    Kelly Clarkson
  • "THE HEROIC PATH is part-poetic, part prophetic. It will push you, comfort you, move you, provoke you and disrupt you. It is witty and insightful, risky and provocative. I'm so glad to introduce you to my friend, John Sowers."
Bob Goff, Best-selling author of Love Does
  • "This book is an awakening for those who realize men have lost their way and are looking for something deeper-something mythic. This is not your everyday 'bravado man' book-this is Fight Club for intellectuals."
Claire Díaz-Ortiz, head of social innovation, Twitter
  • "I'm part of a generation of "lost boys" that have a growing desire to somehow brave the transition out of Neverland and into the true epic - the life of a good man. John bids us to follow as he claws his way to the heart of manhood."
    Josh Garrels, singer songwriter
  • "I love the way John sifts through the mixed and unhelpful messaging about what it means to be a man. In these beautifully written pages, he's searching for more than hammers and guns, and instead recovering qualities like honor, fidelity, and strength. This is important work."
Shauna Niequist, author of Bread & Wine
  • "THE HEROIC PATH takes you off the grid into the deep woods to see things you've never seen before. You will not return the same."
Ed Eason, lead guitarist for Carrie Underwood
  • "If you want a mundane life, throw this book down immediately and go seek shelter. But if you are hunting for the wild masculine, read on. This book is not an instruction manual; it is a soul insurrection."
Jon Collins, digital storyteller at Sincerely Truman
