Juneteenth, short for June Nineteenth marks the day when federal troops arrived in GalvestonTexas in 1865 to ensure that all enslaved people be freed. In other words, for two months, slaves in Texas were unaware they were free and slaveowners weren’t in a hurry to comply with abolition laws.
