Everyone loves a good story about trying to survive in a world doomed by mass destruction, be it from bomb, bug, or biohazard. The popularity of FALLOUT is proof of this; in April, the new series based on the smash hit RPGs of the same name debuted on Amazon Prime.
If you’re looking for books to stock your library down in the Vaults, check out some of these tales of survival, from dystopian classics by Octavia Butler to some engaging new favorites.
The first installment of Octavia Butler’s landmark Xenogenesis series takes a look at what prices people are willing to pay for the good of humanity. Lilith Oyapi has been in a deep sleep for hundreds of years. She wakes up aboard the spaceship of an alien race known as the Oankali, and learns that she is one of a handful of survivors of a nuclear war that devastated Earth. The Oankali seem to have good intentions, and they have made great progress in making the Earth inhabitable again for human beings. They want Lilith to be part of the first group of humans to return to Earth, but Lilith soon learns that the Oankali want something in return: something that the humans find very disturbing.

Climate change has turned the Earth into a hostile, uninhabitable world, overgrown with trees that fill the air with toxic pollen. Humans now live in communities sheltered inside hermetically sealed domes. Izabel lives inside one of these communities with her little daughter Cami. For Izabel, while these domes are a place of safety, they are also a prison. A serial killer is going around slashing the domes, which exposes the people inside to the poisoned air outside, killing them. Moreover, Cami starts talking in her sleep about the killings, and Izabel is at a loss to explain why.

Buxton’s book provides a literally bird’s-eye view of a United States facing the brink of mass extinction. S.T. is a domesticated crow who lives a pretty good life in Seattle with his owner Big Jim, and with Big Jim’s lovable if slow-on-the-uptake dog Dennis. S.T. talks a good game–he likes to make fun of the wild crows–but he’s kind of a coward. Things start getting weird when one of Big Jim’s eyes falls out. None of the usual home cures, including beer, will work, so S.T. and Dennis set out to find a cure. It’s a dangerous world: the neighbors are all eating each other, and there are rumors of scary new predators. It’s pretty clear that the future of the world rests in the hands–or rather, wings–of a crow.

A deadly fungus has laid waste to the world, turning people into “hungries”: sentient beings whose only impulse is to feed on any warm-blooded creature that crosses their path. In what remains of Great Britain, a research team roams the country in an armored vehicle, trying to determine what unleashed the fungus and how to stop it. The team includes Stephen, a most unusual fifteen-year-old boy. One day, Stephen ventures away from the team and discovers a group of juvenile hungries that look and act more like humans. This discovery could mean a cure, but at a terrible cost…

A murder in a small town. The activities of a sinister cult. And cicadas emerging from the earth outside of their usual cycle. All of these things are closely connected in a way that no one could have thought possible, and it’s a combination that could spell doom for humanity. Detective Vicky Paterson is investigating the murder when her daughter is attacked by the cicadas, which proves that the usually benign insects are extremely dangerous. But this swarm of cicadas is the first of many. It falls to Vicky and a group of unlikely allies to figure out what (or who) has unleashed the cicadas on the world, and for what sinister purpose.

Kass Morgan’s book about a mission to repopulate a destroyed Earth was the inspiration for the hit CW show of the same name. Earth has been rendered uninhabitable by catastrophic nuclear war, and the last remnants of humanity have long since fled for the stars. Now, humans are about to return: one hundred teenagers, deemed delinquents and troublemakers by those in charge, sent to recolonize the planet (or die in the process). Among these one hundred are Clarke, Wells, Bellamy, and Glass: four kids carrying painful secrets and heavy burdens. The four of them, along with the other ninety-six, now have the survival of humanity in their hands.

What do you do when your town on the west coast is facing certain annihilation, either from wildfires, nuclear war, or a catastrophic once-in-a-million-years earthquake? If you’re like Griff’s brother Leo, you form a gang of preppers and set up a perfect bunker, a radio station, and a chain of underwater sensors. If you’re like Griff, on the other hand, you’ll dream of the things you want to do before the world ends, like maybe play in a rock band with your friend Charity Sims on vocals. But one night, Griff, Leo, and Charity hear a strange, but wholly amazing, strain of music coming from some unknown source. They set out to find it, and the search for the hidden music could either put them all at risk or completely change their future.
