Hachette Book Group to Distribute All English-Language Ebooks Worldwide
Hachette Book Group has partnered with our sister company, Hachette UK, in a new ebook distribution arrangement that will significantly expand our presence in English language markets worldwide.
Under this arrangement, authors who have granted world or world English language rights of their books to HBG will have ebooks in English available for sale worldwide. Ebooks will go on sale immediately in the UK, Europe, Australia, India and Africa (through HUK’s ebook retail partners) and in South America, the Caribbean, and Asia in the coming weeks (through HBG’s ebook retail partners).
Advantages of this new arrangement include selling ebooks in local currency and with local market knowledge. In addition, HBG's ebooks will be available for promotion and inclusion in retailers' marketing programs in HUK's territories. Authors will receive full ebook royalties on these sales.
Malala Yousafzai, International Advocate for Education, to Pen Young Readers Edition of Her Remarkable Story

Grand Central Life & Style Acquires Two Cookbooks by Acclaimed Chef Mario Batali
Grand Central Life & Style, an imprint of Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group, is pleased to announce the acquisition of two new cookbooks by acclaimed chef, restaurateur, award-winning author and television personality Mario Batali. Karen Murgolo, VP, Editorial Director of Grand Central Life & Style acquired world rights at auction from Tony Gardner of Gardner Literary.
The first cookbook will be written by Batali and Washington Post writer Jim Webster, and will look at farmers and their top products in 12 American states across the country – from Maine to Seattle – and will include 70 recipes that utilize these local ingredients. Publication will be in the Fall of 2014.
The second cookbook will be Batali’s definitive look at American regional cuisine. Little, Brown and Company Announces Pseudonymous Novel Written By J.K. Rowling
Reagan Arthur, Publisher of Little, Brown and Company, announced today that it has been revealed in a Sunday Times (London) story that J. K. Rowling is the author of the novel THE CUCKOO’S CALLING, under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. The book was published by Little, Brown’s Mulholland Books imprint on April 30, 2013.

Little, Brown has acquired astronaut Chris Hadfield’s first book AN ASTRONAUT’S GUIDE TO LIFE ON EARTH. Hachette Book Group Purchases Adult Imprint Hyperion Backlist and Titles for Future Publication
Disney and Hachette Book Group (HBG) announced today Hachette’s agreement to purchase Disney’s adult trade publishing imprint, Hyperion. When the acquisition is completed, HBG will become the publisher of more than 1,000 books published by the Hyperion adult trade book division since its inception in 1991, as well as approximately 25 books scheduled for future publication.

The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes to be Adapted for TV by MRC and Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way

Hachette Book Group to Provide Audiobooks to Blind and Physically Handicapped Readers in Collaboration with the National Library Service And Library of Congress
Hachette Book Group (HBG) announced today that they will provide unabridged audiobook recordings free of charge to the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), part of the Library of Congress (LOC). By the end of 2013, HBG will begin making select backlist and new titles available, including new releases, through the NLS’s popular Talking Books program.
With this collaboration, HBG will help the NLS best serve their user base of close to 500,000 patrons of all ages, who are unable to read or handle regular print books. HBG’s providing high quality audiobook productions at no cost enables the NLS and LOC to save time and money they otherwise would have to spend to create their own versions of HBG’s audiobooks (they are legally entitled to do so through the Chafee Amendment, which allows groups producing specialized formats for the blind to record audios without getting permission from the copyright holder). In this way, HBG is able to contribute to a significant disability organization, and to reach readers hungry for good books.

Orbit Announces Moves for Tim Holman And Anne Clarke
Tim Holman, SVP and Publisher of the Orbit division at Hachette Book Group in the US and the Orbit imprint of Little, Brown Book Group in the UK, will be returning to the UK with his family later this year. He moved from London to New York in 2006, to help set up Orbit in the US. From the UK, he will continue to oversee Orbit’s publishing programs in the US and UK and be making frequent trips to New York.
At the same time, Anne Clarke, currently Editorial Director of Orbit in the UK, will relocate from London to New York and take up the role of Deputy Publisher, reporting to Tim Holman. Jamie Raab, President and Publisher of Grand Central Publishing announced today that Deb Futter has been named Publisher of Twelve. In addition to her new role, Futter remains Vice President, Editor-in-Chief of Grand Central Publishing.
Since coming to GCP in 2007, Futter has acquired numerous bestselling and acclaimed books including Scott Turow’s Innocent, Carole King’s memoir A Natural Woman, and Steve Martin’s An Object of Beauty. Grand Central Publishing Announces Major Expansion of Forever Imprint
Grand Central Publishing (GCP) announced today a major initiative to expand its romance publishing program over the next two years. Celebrating its 10 year anniversary this year, GCP’s romance imprint Forever and its year-old e-book only imprint Forever Yours will expand from a 2012 list of 64 titles to approximately 120 titles in 2013 and over 190 titles in 2014. As part of this growth initiative, Forever will be adding to its editorial and marketing staff.
Forever is the home of bestselling writers Elizabeth Hoyt, Jill Shalvis, and Larissa Ione and in recent months has acquired rising stars Jessica Sorensen, Kelli Maine, and J.A. Redmerski. It publishes its titles in a mix of trade paperback, mass market, e-book and audio formats.

Reagan Arthur Named Publisher of Little, Brown and Company
Michael Pietsch, Publisher of Little, Brown and Company and incoming CEO of Hachette Book Group, announced today that Reagan Arthur will become Little, Brown's Senior Vice President and Publisher. Arthur, currently Editorial Director of Reagan Arthur Books, a Little, Brown imprint, assumes her new role on April 1, when Pietsch takes over as CEO. She will also join Hachette's Executive Management Board at that time.
Arthur arrived at Little, Brown in 2001 and in 2008 was named VP, Editorial Director of Reagan Arthur Books. Among the many bestselling and prizewinning writers she has acquired and edited are Tina Fey, author of the million-copy-selling #1 bestsellerBossypants, National Book Award finalist Joshua Ferris, Whitbread Award winner Kate Atkinson, and numerous New York Times bestselling writers including Elin Hilderbrand, George Pelecanos, and Ian Rankin. Grand Central Publishing Acquires Bestselling Biographer Kitty Kelley's New Book on the Women of the U.S. Senate
Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group, is pleased to announce the acquisition today of the next major book by Kitty Kelley, the award-winning author of # 1 New York Times bestselling biographies of Oprah Winfrey, Nancy Reagan, the British Royal Family, the Bush family and Frank Sinatra. Jamie Raab, President and Publisher of Grand Central Publishing acquired the North American rights from Wayne Kabak, CEO of WSK Management, LLC. The tentative publication date for the new book and accompanying audio edition is Spring 2016 with Raab editing.
With the largest number of women serving in the nation’s history-- 20 women in the U.S. Senate and 78 in the House of Representatives -- Kelley will investigate their influence on the 113th Congress in her new book. Grand Central Publishing to Publish Rob Zombie's THE LORDS OF SALEM
Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group, announced today that it will publish THE LORDS OF SALEM—a terrifying story straight from the singular mind of horror maestro Rob Zombie—on March 12, 2013. The novel is based on the original screenplay by Rob Zombie and written with multiple award-winning horror author B.K. Evenson. Nolan Ryan, baseball hall of famer and cattle rancher, to publish cookbook
Michael Pietsch, Executive Vice President and Publisher of Little, Brown and Company, announced today that Little, Brown has acquired North American publication rights to Nolan Ryan’s The Nolan Ryan Beef Cookbook. The book is scheduled for publication in May 2014.
Nolan Ryan is known for his prowess on the baseball diamond. The only player in the Major Leagues to have his number retired by three different teams, he also holds the single-season and career major-league strikeout records, and the Guinness World Record for throwing the fastest baseball ever, clocked at 100.9 miles per hour. Ryan has pitched seven no-hitters, a major-league record, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He is currently a member of the owner’s group as well as , president and CEO of the Texas Rangers.
But ever since he bought his first heifer at the tender age of ten, ranching has been close to Nolan Ryan’s heart. Ryan was one of the first baseball players to sign a contract worth $1 million. He invested his earnings in a ranch. While still pitching for the Texas Rangers he was asked to run for Texas Commissioner of Agriculture, and during this period in his career, he started to compile his favorite beef recipes.

San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro to Publish His Memoir

Lagardère Announces Third Quarter Results
Lagardère released its results for third quarter 2012 today. Highlights of the company’s performance are as follows:
At Lagardère: The Lagardère group’s activity “held up well, notably thanks to a return to sales growth at Lagardère Publishing and continued development in Travel Retail at Lagardère Services,” according to the company’s press release. The Group delivered net sales for the third quarter of €1.963B (-0.4% on a like-for-like basis and -1% on a reported basis).
At Hachette Livre: Hachette Livre (Lagardère Publishing) delivered net sales of €626M, up 4.2% in reported terms and up .1% like-for-like. Of note during the third quarter was the stellar performance by General Literature, which rose sharply in France (+12.4%), the UK (+17%), and the US (+7.3%), thanks to the release of JK Rowling’s THE CASUAL VACANCY on September 27. This solid performance by General Literature helped offset the slowdown in the company’s education business in France, Spain, and the UK. Digital continues to grow within the publishing division, accounting for 20% of total third-quarter Adult trade book sales in both the US and the UK, representing 6.4% of total net sales for Hachette Livre.
At Hachette Book Group: While net revenues were up 6% in the third quarter, on a year to date basis HBG’s sales are still below the prior year. Digital sales at HBG increased 3% compared with the third quarter of 2011. Digital represents 20% of HBG's net sales, consistent with last year.
HBG had 184 titles – including 27 #1s – on the New York Times bestseller list thus far in 2012. We have surpassed our year-end total of 182 bestselling titles in 2011. In addition, 59 titles hit the New York Times ebook bestseller list. The key titles driving HBG sales for the third quarter include LOW PRESSURE by Sandra Brown, CHANGE YOUR WORDS CHANGE YOUR LIFE by Joyce Meyer, I DECLARE by Joel Osteen, I, MICHAEL BENNETT by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge, NEVERMORE by James Patterson, THE CASUAL VACANCY by JK Rowling, and THE BEST OF ME by Nicholas Sparks.

Legendary Musician John Fogerty to Publish His Memoir
Michael Pietsch, publisher of Little, Brown and Company, announced today that Little, Brown has acquired rock and roll legend John Fogerty’s memoir for publication in 2014.
In his long-awaited memoir, John Fogerty—one of rock’s most important artists and a national treasure who’s sold over 100 million albums—will recount his remarkable life. Fogerty’s private and professional journey is one of the great sagas in American music, and his book will interweave the facts of his life with the music that emerged from his personal joys and battles. New Sales Structure for HBG
Evan Schnittman, EVP and Chief Sales and Marketing Officer of Hachette Book Group, has announced a new structure for HBG’s sales force that will bring the sales and marketing functions in line with the changing book market – unifying print and digital sales, and integrating research and analytics into HBG’s overall sales strategy.
HBG will not be reducing headcount as part of the re-alignment announced today. We are changing our current structure to enable HBG to meet the needs and challenges of our ever-shifting world, where digital has made a deep and lasting impression on the way HBG sells and the customers we sell to, the platforms we advertise on, and the manner and type of content we publish.
This re-alignment includes the following hires and promotions:
Chris Murphy has been promoted to Senior Vice President of the newly created Retail Sales department, which will consist of 5 sub-departments: National Accounts, CBA, Clients and Nashville, Young Reader Sales, & National Field Force.
We have hired David Bowers as SVP of Sales Strategy & Operations (SSO), a new group within HBG’s sales department. David comes to HBG from Oxford University Press where he has been Global VP of Business Development and Publisher, Oxford Academic Dictionaries. David will oversee both operations in sales (analytics, retail promotion, retailer services, ebook platforms services, metadata optimization, business modeling, and key author liaising) and Online Retailer and Jobber accounts.
The third group, International, Canada, & Special Markets (ICS), will continue to be led by Jean Griffin, VP ICS and Publishing Director, Ansel Adams.
Additional changes in the Sales department:
• Rick Cobban, has been named Vice President of National Accounts.

Hachette Livre Chairman Arnaud Nourry Announces Leadership Changes at Hachette Book Group and Hachette UK
Arnaud Nourry, Chairman of Hachette Livre, announced today that after seven years at the helm of Hachette Book Group, David Young has decided to return to the UK to be with his family. His last day as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Hachette Book Group will be March 31, 2013. He will remain Chairman of HBG and will return to the U.S. approximately one week per month.
Effective April 1, 2013, Michael Pietsch, now Executive Vice President of HBG and Publisher of Little, Brown and Company, will succeed David Young as Chief Executive Officer of HBG, assuming full responsibility for the company’s profitability and direction. He will report to David Young and will begin immediately the search for a new Publisher for the division that he has led for the past 11 years.
Effective immediately, Ken Michaels, HBG’s Chief Operating Officer, is promoted to President and Chief Operating Officer. Ken Michaels joined HBG in 2009 and has overseen major contributions to HBG and Hachette Livre with the Order to Cash and Digital Asset Distribution platform, among many other systems enhancements. He is also responsible for HBG’s important third-party distribution services that will see the return of Disney and Hyperion in the second quarter of 2013.
In the UK, David Young on June 1, 2013 will assume the role of Deputy Chief Executive of Hachette UK and Chief Executive Officer of The Orion Publishing Group, a division of Hachette UK. In that capacity he will report to HUK’s CEO, Tim Hely Hutchinson. Tim Hely Hutchinson has today announced that Peter Roche will retire, in June 2013, from his role as Deputy CEO of Hachette UK and CEO of The Orion Publishing Group, the company he co-founded in 1992 and which he has led for the past 10 years.
David Young will also chair Hachette Livre’s Chief Operating Officers’ council, covering France, UK, USA and Spain, to help all parts of Hachette Livre benefit from his understanding of the publishing processes, systems, and efficiency. In this role and in his capacity as Chairman of HBG, he will report to Arnaud Nourry.
